Californians Take Their Flip Flops Seriously
Flip Flops are a religion in California. We spend most of our summer running around in our favorite pair. People are passionate about their favorites, and many of us have quite the collection of flip flops in our closet.
Ten years ago, when training for a half marathon, I ended up with Plantar Fasciitis. It was almost summer, and my doctor told me to wear only structured shoes for the next six months. There was no way I was making it through the summer without wearing flip flops.
I began a search for the perfect flip flop. It had to offer arch support for my torn fascia but also had to be comfortable and cute. First, I tried Birkenstocks, but I just couldn’t do it. This was long before they made a fashion resurgence. I purchased and wore for a while some Mephisto sandals, but even though they were crazy comfortable, they just looked like my grandmother’s shoes. Even the most fashionable pair left me looking geriatric. Listen up, Mephisto, your shoes could be so much cuter!
OluKai Flip Flops
Then someone recommended OluKai Flip Flops. I hunted down a pair at our local surf shop, and I was hooked instantly. They are now sold at Nordstrom and are available in several different styles. They are honestly the most comfortable summer shoes I own. I can wear them for a day at Disneyland or long walks on the beach. I have a house pair that I use exclusively in the house, much like my slippers, but for summer.
I can justify wearing flip flops almost anywhere and with almost anything. Sure, a cute leather sandal would look more stylish with my summer dress, but I am definitely at the age where I refuse to suffer for fashion. Am I the only one who finds most sandals so uncomfortable? I was delighted when flip flops hit the fashion scene last year. Fashion women everywhere will undoubtedly realize what us California girls have known all along that flip flops are just plain awesome!

My Favorite OluKai Flip Flops
Ohana Sandal
The original and my first pair of Olukai flip flops were the Ohana Sandal. I have these sandals in several colors, including grey and white. These have a water-resistant strap and quick-dry lining. The arch support is the best and the thicker strap means more structure for your foot. I wore these all summer recovering from my injury.
‘Ho Opio’ Flip Flop
The ‘Ho Opio’ Flip Flop has a slim strap and streamlined design. Available in sixteen different colors and patterns, you are bound to find one that fits your style. I am wearing these right now. The silver are my favorites.
Kaekae Ko’o Flip Flop
I just ordered these Kaekae Ko’o Flip Flops. They are an elevated flip flop that you could get away with at a barbecue or beach party. Yes, we will be able to get out and party together again. The leather puts these in straight-up, sandal territory. Wear them anywhere you would wear your favorite sandals.
I have had most of my OluKai flip flops for years. They last forever. I just keep adding to my collection. They are honestly the best flip flop on the market.
