Anything But Boring!
My teenage daughter asked me, “Why a tan sweater? Tan sweaters are so boring!” At some level, I must agree with her because until recently I didn’t see a need for one in my wardrobe. But lately, I have been feeling that this common wardrobe staple is something I wanted. I think it is the resurgence of an array of earth tones and a return to rich brown shoes and boots, tan sweater is a perfect compliment. Or as I mature my style has skewed toward the traditional. Na, that isn’t it. Either way, I decided to pick one up.
The one I chose is the J.Crew V-Neck Boyfriend Sweater in Everyday Cashmere. It definitely beat out the Halogen Cashmere Sweater which is also great but not as warm and with a slightly pink undertone to the tan which I didn’t like on me. My goal now was to make this “boring” item seem fresh for the holidays.

Plaid Shirt and Boots
First, I paired the sweater with a tartan plaid shirt from Madewell. You can find it here. It gives the sweater a pop of color for the holidays. To up the edgy factor (something I always like to do) I paired with my Stuart Weitzman Lowland Over-the-Knee boots. This outfit is so comfortable that it is perfect for a day of holiday shopping. A sweater must be able to be layered over other items meaning it can’t be too hot or too heavy individually. I can get hot at a moment’s notice so I need to be able to take the sweater off when my internal thermostat reaches boiling.
Silky Skirt and Combat Boots
How about this Treasure & Bond skirt? So good, right? The skirt is silky and drapes just right. I love the rich red and the hint of holiday. Maybe my favorite purchase this season are these Nordstrom Signature Combat Boots. I feel like they are the right balance to the feminine skirt. You could easily pair this skirt with slouchy black boots or flats for those warmer winter days.
Classic Pinstripe Shirt and Moto Leggings
Next, I wore the tan sweater with a classic blue pinstripe. You know I think leggings are pants and these Alo Moto Leggings are no exception. My husband calls them my “Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome” Leggings, but I remain devoted. I love these leggings. They are supper comfortable and add just the right edge to my way preppy shirt and sweater. Pair with your favorite sneakers and a plaid wrap and you are ready for Christmas caroling or picking out a tree.
Print Pants and Fun Shoes
There is nothing boring about these Scotch & Soda Floral Print pants. They are a viscose-blend with tuxedo striping on the side. They are perfect for the holidays or anytime, really. I also wear them with sneakers and a tee on summer nights.
A tan sweater is a versatile piece to add to any wardrobe. It is perfect all winter but can easily be worn for the holidays. How do you wear your tan sweaters for the holidays?
