My Picks for the Best Dad Jeans

It is hard to remember a time when skinny jeans weren’t the norm. It was just back in 2005, when they were reintroduced and most of us baulked at the idea. Now skinny jeans are the only style most people wear. Their takeover has been total and complete. But, lately, I have been feeling, all the feels, for loose or baggy jeans. Baggy Jeans are finally back in style.

The anti-skinny jean, also known as baggy jeans or dad jeans, is hot right now. There are a ton of silhouettes popping up everywhere, from slouchy boyfriend to baggy wide-leg. I am in love. And in truth, I now can’t imagine why I ever gave them up in the first place.

Hello? Baggy Jeans Make Sense

Loose or baggy jeans just make sense. They are completely comfortable even when you just ate that whole plate of pasta. They are loose enough in summer to allow you to feel cool; And the perfect amount of slouch is actually quite slimming.

I have been on the lookout for a baggy pair of jeans for about a year. Until recently, it has been slim pickings. To scratch my itch for a pair of baggy jeans, I first bought a pair of men’s Levi’s 501. I sized up so I could get the baggy look. Men’s jeans are great for us tall girls since you can order your specific inseam. Mine is 34.

So Many Styles – Baggy, Dad, Mom, etc.

Now, there are a ton of different baggy styles to choose from and you can likely find one from your favorite brand (Hey! rag & bone,  I hope you get on this bandwagon as you are my most loved brand). They are called everything from baggy jeans, oversized, Dad or even Mom jeans. I decided, I wanted (I often say need but I am really trying to be specific about want and need) a couple additional pairs for spring and summer. I stuck with baggy denim with little to no distressing or holes as I wanted the baggy look but not the grungy style. There are a host of options with holes if that is your jam. I will link some below. Here are the styles I tried and my thoughts on each:

Levi’s Men 501 Original Fit

These are the Levi’s I bought last year to satisfy my craving for a pair of baggy jeans. I sized up for the baggy look. One great thing about buying men’s jeans is you can order the exact inseam you need usually from 29 to 36. These are classic 501 Levi’s and are effortlessly cool. The price is incredible for the quality. I picked these up for under $50. Many of the other pricier denim try to emulate the classic distressing of a good pair of Levi’s.

Acne Studios 1997 Jeans

My initial goal was to find a pair of baggy jeans that were long enough for me. I have now decided I want two pairs, one long and one cropped. I ordered these Acne Studios jeans from Shopbop. They are more than I like to spend on jeans at $320 but finding the fit I want has proven a bit difficult. I ordered two sizes up in these jeans. And dang it! I love them. They are perfect. The denim fabric is light and comfortable, perfect for spring and summer. The rise is 10.25 which is the max I like to wear given my short torso. Honestly, I was trying really hard to justify keeping these, but I found a pair I like almost as much for $80 less.

Re/Done Originals High Waist Loose Jeans

This pair, I decided to keep. Re/Done repurposes vintage Levi’s for a modern look and vintage feel. This pair has a button fly and 12″ front rise (I am not sure that is accurate given the fit but that is what they state on the description). I sized up, one size to get a baggier look. I think because of the slouch, the rise doesn’t feel as high. They are still pricey at $250 but I know I will get a ton of wear out of them this year.

Madewell The Tall Slim Boyjean in Hayes Wash

Madewell makes high quality denim at a reasonable price. These Boyjeans are on sale for $99 right now. I bought these in tall for the 31″ inseams so I could wear them cuffed or rolled. The rise is 8.5 which is perfect for those of us with a short torso. I thought I wanted a darker denim option but I decided to pass on these for spring. They will be perfect for fall and winter as I am sure the baggy denim trend will still be going strong into the fall.

Madewell The Tall Slim Boyfriend in Carlson Wash

These are the same pair as above but in a light wash with mild distressing. I love this pair. The denim is a bit softer and lighter weight than the darker denim and in tall they are the perfect length for cuffing or rolling. I highly recommend this pair and all Madewell jeans. They are just so well made (pun intended) for the price.

AG Angel Flare Jean

I picked these AG Angel Flares up on a recent trip to Nordstrom. I know they aren’t the baggy style that you may be looking for but the flare is another fun option for spring/summer. The style works perfectly with heeled sandals. AG are always my most comfortable pair of jeans and these are no exception. They have a 8.5″ front rise and 34″ inseam. I prefer wearing this cut with a heel but I found these look great with sneakers too, as the flare isn’t to extreme. The denim is light weight and stretchy. These are a definite, HELL YES!

AGOLDE The ’90’s Jeans

This is the first pair of AGOLDE jeans I have tried. The quality is impeccable. The denim is dark but with the perfect amount of fading. The cut is slim through the hips and the rise is 12.5″. I love the straight, loose fit but I just can’t pull off this high a rise. It looks like I have zero waist. I really wanted to love these too, because so many other things were right, but alas, these had to go back. If you have a longer waist these would be an amazing baggy jean option.

Citizen of Humanity Corey Slouchy Slim Jeans

Citizen is another one of my go-to denim brands. I know I can find a great fit and cool wash. These Corey Slouchy are no exception. They have the perfect amount of distressing and a slightly tapered cropped look. They have a 11″ front rise with button fly on no stretch denim. I ordered two sizes up in these originally but returned for just a size up, as I felt they were a bit too loose in the waist. I am definitely keeping these for summer.

This has already proven to be a long, long winter. I for one cannot wait for spring. I am so excited for all the spring/summer clothing options. Check out my take on two of the season’s biggest trends: All Beige Outfits and Tie Dye.

My favorites are skinny jeans (despite the feeling tight factor) but also bootcut is flattering on my body. I love the Agolde look you show above too.

I loved reading your commentary on different brands of jeans. I have worn a few designer brands but most recently I am wearing a lot of Old Navy Rockstar, they have been great! I think finding a great pair that you love is worth any amount because denim is a staple in so many wardrobes!

I wore mine today and I felt long and leaner. I recommend pointy toe shoes. Helps elongate the legs. xo

The AG Angel Flares are definitely a good style for me. Like you, I’m short-wasited so I must be careful with front rise. And, because I’m shorter, the flare with a heel gives me some added length, which helps with my menopause hips! I will check them out!

The AG Angel jeans look great on you. That’s not a brand I’m familiar with, so I’m going to check them out!

They are super comfortable because of the perfect amount of stretch and a ton of AG jeans are on sale at Shopbop.
