Add Some Plaid for the Holidays

Are you a Christmas sweater kind of person? I’m definitely not. It isn’t a bah-humbug moment. I just never understood why every year people break out sweaters adorned with teddy bears and Christmas trees when they wouldn’t consider wearing similar items at other times during the year. Of course, I love Christmas as much as the next person. There is a way to be subtly festive when Xmas sweaters aren’t your thing. Up your holiday spirit by adding plaid to your outfits.

There are a ton of popular holiday plaids from Cameron of Erracht to Royal Stuart. There are so many plaid options that finding one to suit your personality is easy. Traditional Christmas plaids always contain elements of red. But a Christmas plaid can include white, yellow, green, or blue.  The most popular plaid during the holidays is Royal Stewart.

Plaid options show up around the time the Christmas music starts playing.  They can be found at almost every retailer and in everything from coats to underwear. And why not? Plaid is perfect for the holidays.

Blouse // (similar) Treasure & Bond Plaid Boyfriend Shirt – My shirt is from Madewell last year. I linked a similar plaid at a great price. The T&B has a subtle metallic thread which ups the festive level a notch. I will link other fun plaid shirts below. I’m also loving this Alex Mill Standard Plaid Shirt.

Jeans // AG The Legging Ankle Hem – My closet is full of jeans. I am a “jeans girl.” Even with so many to choose from, I consistently reach for these jeans. They are one of my favorite pairs. They have just the right amount of stretch, allowing them to remain comfortable all day. If I plan to wear jeans on a flight, I always wear this perfect pair.

Blazer // 1901 Stretch Cotton Twill Blazer – This casual blazer is currently on sale for less than $60. It runs a bit small. I usually size up for more room, but I’m wearing a size ten, and it is more fitted.

Boots // rag & bone Walker Bootie – This classic Chelsea style bootie slips on easily and with no adornments will never go out of style. I have them in both black & tan. They run a bit narrow but I haven’t found them to be too narrow for my average foot.

2. Plaid Shirt + Wide Leg Crop + Sock Booties

Blouse // (similar) L.L Bean Scotch Plaid Flannel Shirt – You can’t go wrong with a plaid shirt from the purveyors of preppy. Cozy flannel and available in nine different preppy plaids.

Jeans // Madewell Wide Leg Crop in Delancey Wash – They are currently on sale for $39.99 with only a few sizes left, but there are other washes available. I know this cut is controversial. The key is finding a pair that hits at the right spot on your leg. Madewell makes these in petite and tall. Though I usually wear a tall in Madewell denim, I bought the regular because the tall was just a bit too long. They looked more like I was wearing high-water pants than intentionally cropped pants.

Boots // Aquatalia Tilly Weatherproof Bootie – These boots are beyond comfortable. I am considering buying one of the other colors. They are currently 40%. The navy is kinda awesome.  Did I mention they are weatherproof, so no worries about the weather. The block heel is the perfect walkable height. I am wearing size nine, which is my usual in most boots.

3. Plaid Shirt +Black Leggings + Blazer + Croc Boots

Blouse // (similar) Frank & Eileen Button Down Modal Shirt – This is the shirt I would buy if I were shopping for a festive plaid shirt this year. I love the black base and stripes in gold, blue, and red.

Blazer // Everlane The Oversized Blazer – One of my favorite purchases this year is this oversized blazer. I bought it in black and Glen Plaid. It is an oversized blazer, so I ordered the size eight, and it fits perfectly. Everlane is quickly becoming one of my favorite online shops. They make quality, affordable staples. My only complaint is their shipping takes quite a while, and they charge for returns.

Pants // Paige Hoxton Ultra Skinny Ponte Pants – The pair I am wearing are Paige from several years ago back when low rise was popular. They are way too low now. What were we even thinking back then? Right after I took this shot, I put them in the donate pile and will order the updated pair. The Hoxton Pants have a reasonable mid-rise.

Boots // Sigerson Morrison Croc Embossed Boots – These are a splurge. My favorite animal print this year is crocodile. It feels so fresh. If you love the look but not the expense, these Marc Fisher Croc Embossed Western Boots are a great alternative. They have a low, walkable heel and are perfect for every day. If a bootie is more your thing, these Via Spiga Croc Booties are sharp.

4. Plaid Shirt + Tan  Sweater + Jeans + OTK Boots

Blouse // (similar) Treasure & Bond Plaid Boyfriend Shirt – My shirt is from Madewell last year. I linked a similar plaid at a great price. The T&B has a subtle metallic thread which ups the festive level a notch. I will link other fun plaid shirts below. I’m loving this Alex Mill Standard Plaid Shirt.

Sweater // J.Crew V-neck Boyfriend Sweater in Everday Cashmere – A tan sweater doesn’t have to be boring. If you still aren’t convinced to add some plaid, try layering this comfortable sweater over your plaid shirt, so there is just a hint of plaid.

Jeans // Seven for All Mankind Ankle Skinny Jeans – These jeans are my favorite to wear with OTK boots. They have the perfect amount of stretch and never slouch at the knee, keeping a clean line from boot to pant.

Boot // Stuart Weitzman Lowland Boots – These are the most comfortable boots I own. I wore them all over NYC a few years ago, and they held up to the weather and walking. They run large. I usually wear an 8.5 or 9 in boots and am wearing a size 8. If the cost is prohibitive, these Vince Camuto Hailie OTK Boot are a dead-ringer for the Stuart Weitzman. I bought the Vince Camuto for my daughter when she started to eye my Lowlands.

5. Plaid Shirt + Green Cargo Pants + Loafers

Pants // (similar) Joie Park Skinny Utility Cargo Pant – Mine are J Brand and seriously old. I still love them and wear them all the time. The Joie is an excellent alternative. I have them in pink, and the fit is very similar to the J Brand.

Shoes // Gucci Loafers – These shoes are a classic that will never go out of style. The Sam Edelman Lior Loafer is a dupe at a fraction of the cost. I also love the chunkier sole of the Paul Green Topper Loafer.
