When I was in Jr. high my mom let me go bathing suit shopping with a friend. These were the days when we could ride the bus downtown and just walk around from shop to shop without a care in the world. We eventually ended up at a surf shop, and I purchased a one-piece bathing suit. Sounds innocuous enough. When I got home, my mother was furious because the bathing suit consisted of little more than a few triangles and some string. It was the required one piece, but just barely.
She insisted that I take it back to the store. So we drove downtown, and the salesperson kindly informed my mom that all bathing suit sales are final. It was the 80s and a small surf shop, I don’t blame them. That is my earliest memory of the nightmare that bathing suit shopping can be.
Shop Online
The internet saved us all the drudgery of schlepping into a store and trying to find the perfect suit under the harsh department store lighting. Now, I just browse several shops: Nordstrom, Shopbop, and Anthropologie are my favorites. Order several and try them on in the comfort of my own home.
To make things easier for you, I searched the internet for the top 10 One Piece Bathing Suits for Women Over 50. My goal is fun not frumpy. Reality is that at 50, I am more comfortable in a one piece. It allows me to do all the things without worrying about my tummy looking fat. If you can rock a bikini without being self-conscious more power to you. Unfortunately, that is just not me. I’ll be sticking to one piece swimsuits.

Bathing Suit Picks
- Becca Double Tie Front One Piece – I love a tie front bathing suit. It allows a bit more of a plunging neckline without the possible exposure when swimming.
- Trina Turk Sunrise One Piece – Trina Turk consistently makes fashionable and quality suits. Every year, I like to pick up one plain color suit and one print suit. The rainbow stripes are fun for summer.
- PQ Swim Ombre One Piece – This suit is cut a little high on the sides, but it works with the more conservative top. The ombre is refreshing and pretty.
- Red Carter Blondie Ruched One Piece – Pink leopard, yes, please! The ruching at the side means you can adjust the cut of this bathing suit. It also adds a flattering bow detail. Deep plunging back is perfect for the sunbathing we really shouldn’t be doing.
- Mara Hoffman Emma One Piece – Animal prints are still a big trend in swimwear. The traditional tiger print on this suit is perfect for summer. Fun details on the tie-back make this suit a little something extra.
- Onio Betty One Piece – The cut edge detail has a similar feel to the Marysia bathing suit that I can’t justify buying because of the high price. Can someone tell me if the Marysia suit is truly worth the $350 price tag?
- Peixoto Isla Printed One Piece – I’m a little obsessed with animal print swimwear. This time a snow leopard print with plunging neck and strappy back.
- La Blanca Island Goddess Lace Up One Piece – Hot pink is one of my favorite colors for swimsuits. La Blanca consistently makes quality suits that you can wear for years. It is also available in black and on sale for $50.
- Peony Cut Out Strapless One Piece – Small floral prints are on trend for summer. The black and green print keep this floral from seeming to dainty. Again, I love a good cut out at the top. This one might just have to be mine.
- Gottex Retro Chic Halter One Piece – I’m surprised this is the only halter bathing suit on my list. Halter top suits are perfect for lounging. The pattern play on this retro style hides any perceived belly imperfections. This suit is selling out fast, so if you like it, snap it up soon.
Cover-Up Picks
Finding a good cover-up can be tricky. It is a good idea to pick up a cover-up whenever you see a good one. I prefer more of a full coverage cover-up like in my photo. I find it easier to wear into a restaurant at a resort comfortably. A pull-on jumpsuit is also a makes a great cover-up, and I have included a few in my selection.
Many of us are forgoing vacations this summer and sticking closer to home. Hopefully, we can return to the beach and enjoy the pool soon. Picking up a new suit and cover-up is a hopeful sign of things to come. Similar to my Summer Sandal Magic, I’m dreaming of a vacation in my new bathing suit.
