You Are Never Too Old for a Graphic Tee

Over the last year, I discovered the fabulousness that is Facebook groups. I joined one group and loved it, and now I am a member of almost 20 different groups. It started with a group of people who grew up in my hometown. I added more groups as I became a blogger. Then, I joined the groups of my favorite bloggers. Now I mostly interact in Peloton groups, including one for luxury purses lovers and another that focuses on Peloton strength workouts.

Facebook Groups Link to The World in Quarantine

Being isolated in 2020, FB groups allowed people to interact online in a meaningful way. I learned so much from my online friends. When considering explant, I joined a group for women who suffer from Breast Implant Illness or BII. The women in the group share their experiences, recommendations, and support to others openly. In my Peloton groups, I learned how to train in my Power Zones effectively, joined challenges, and have access to a training calendar, making workouts less stressful to plan.

Not All FB Groups are Good

Not every group is the right fit. I joined one notorious Peloton group and asked a question just to be berated by 100’s of people for it. I promptly left. As a long-time member of the Living In Yellow Group, I was stunned when Erin allowed her group to descend into chaos after the murder of George Floyd. Ultimately, shutting down the group instead of taking a stand on the issue of racial justice.

A new group popped up, many of old LIY members joined, and the moderators are much better at preventing hate speech and bigoted behavior. The general groups seem to be where the most controversy happens. If you are interested in Facebook groups, you can find one for any of your hobbies or vices. Most require you to be approved by agreeing to follow their rules. Give different groups a try until you find one that clicks with you. I enjoy my FB groups more than my regular feed these days. Most are low drama and extremely supportive.

A Constant Question – Am I too Old for…..

A thoughtful moderator with well-defined rules is key to a successful Facebook Group. I bring all of this up to say; I spend way too much time reading, commenting, and chatting with women online. One thing that is universal but really shouldn’t be is the question, “Am I too old to wear this….?” Insert any item you can think of, from Birkenstocks to braids. I cannot tell you how many times women ask this question in my FB groups.

My answer is always; you are never too old to wear anything you love. So rock the graphic tee, short-shorts, and sweats. I understand where the worry comes from. As we age, women are told to succumb to anonymity, hide their sexuality and most certainly act their age. It is a strange request given that at midlife, many of us finally hit our stride, find our voice and embrace all of our bodies.

Over the years, the rules for midlife have definitely relaxed. Still, so many women have internalized the aging requirements worrying if a certain outfit or lipstick is appropriate for their advanced age. I had to cry foul when women in their late 30’s started asking if they are too old for a certain item. Items that, at my advanced age of 51, I wear on repeat.

It is time to blow up the old ideals of what is acceptable for a certain age woman. There is not one single time I have seen an older woman rocking her style that I didn’t applaud. So to the question, am I too old for a graphic tee? – I say hell no!

There are so many great graphic tees available now. You can sport your favorite band tee, make a statement or wear a pretty image on a tee. Below, I will walk you through some of my favorites.

Band  Tees

Let’s be real – many band tees the teenagers wear are bands from our generation. One of my daughter’s favorites is a Sublime tee from Urban Outfitters. I told her to wear the tee she must know at least one song from the band. She found out the hard way why it is important when she was questioned by a sales clerk about her favorite Journey song when sporting that band tee in public. This is the 2021 equivalent of writing a band name on your PeeChee folder because you think the name is cool but having never listened to a single song by the band. I’m talking to you pseudo Sex Pistols fans. I personally won’t wear a band tee of a band I don’t like. What is the point in that?

Logo or Brand Tees

One way to get in on the logo craze is to invest in a tee from your favorite brand. Gucci capitalized early on this trend, and now all the luxury brands have jumped on board. The tees are often expensive but will last for years. Funny story – I purchased a Gucci tee and brought it home to find a hole in the collar. I went back to the store to exchange it to find out that the tee is intentionally distressed and the hole was meant to be there. Silly since it is the only distressing on the entire shirt.
You can often find tees on sale, as I did with this red Balenciaga tee I am wearing in the photo. Below are some of my favorite other logo tees. I primarily stick with fashion brand tees over other brand tees (for example Harley-Davidson or Budweiser). They are more fashionable and chic.

Anine Bing Tees

If you read my blog regularly, you know I am a huge fan of Anine Bing, especially the tees. The quality is impeccable, and the designs are as cool as any band tee. I snap new styles up when they come available as they sell out fast. Because I prefer a tee oversized, I wear a large in all her tees.

I recently ordered the super cool Ida Tee that so many influencers have, but I couldn’t keep it. I feel like it glamorizes smoking, and having lost someone to lung cancer, I want no part in glorifying such a horrible habit. People would say I put too much emphasis on the power of a piece of clothing, but as a fashion blogger shouldn’t that be exactly what I do? Anyway, I decided to return it and stick with her other tees. I recently ordered The Palm Tee and The Lili Tee from the Bloomingdale’s Buy More, Save More event.

Message  Tees

Now that we have established that as a fashion blogger, I believe in the power of fashion; it is no surprise I love a good message tee. I have many that I love, including my Wild Feminist and Black Lives Matter tees. Generally, I purchase directly from organizations that use the profits for good.

I also love finding pretty graphic tees from my favorite retailers. Anthropologie always has fabulous options. I am excited that sweater weather is almost over, and we can move on to t-shirt weather. I plan to sport my favorite graphic tees with my new favorite pair of shorts, the AGOLDE Parker Longs. More on them in another post. Snatch them up soon if you want them. The shorter version sold out early in summer, and I couldn’t get my hands on a pair until this spring.

More to Love

Graphic tees come in all sorts of styles. There is definitely something for everyone. I accidentally ruined in the wash my Clare V. tee below. I loved this tee for the drape and easy style. Somehow I washed it with a dark something or other and now it is a grey.  I am on the hunt for a replacement. I would love to find a wolf tee similar to this one. The wolf is my spirit animal. Sadly, most wolf tees are definitely not fashionable (think Southwest gift shop chic). I may have to resort to a wolf tattoo.

Graphic tees work perfectly with all your favorite summer styles, from shorts to skirts. They are effortlessly cool and the perfect foundation for any outfit. With so many options available, you are sure to find one that works for you. I plan to be rocking the graphic tee as long as they are in fashion.

Remember you are not too old for any trend that you love. Of course, I don’t love all trends. For example, I am sitting the low-rise jeans trend out. I am hoping that the return of the low-rise jean means more mid-rise options for this short-waisted woman. But maybe low-rise jeans are your thing, and you have been waiting for their return. I say go for it. Life is far too short to worry if you are too old.
