Trend Alert: Long Denim Skirt

Here’s the thing, I’m never giving up pants, but now and then a girl needs to shake things up a bit. Watching fashion trends as I do, one trend keeps catching my eye – the long denim skirt. So I decided to give it a try. Searching for the right skirt, I found many of the top fashion houses are offering versions of this skirt for really high prices. I’m not ready to invest so much in a trend I am not 100% sure of yet.

So I ventured over to Gap to see what they had available. I didn’t find quite what I was looking for, but they do have a couple of great denim skirts, I’ll link below. I finally settled on this One Teaspoon Rocko Long Length Skirt from Shopbop. I ordered a size 30 because I like skirts to hang on my hip instead of pinching my waist. But the denim is rigid and lacks stretch; it would have been better to order my normal size.

Overall, I like the idea of a denim skirt. I love how many of these skirts look like de-constructed jeans. It feels clever and retro. This one has a pretty significant slit that shows off the leg. I think it helps it from feeling too conservative.

Spring is Almost Here

Spring is around the corner, and honestly, it can’t come soon enough for me.  I’m styling this skirt three ways below focused on spring styling. Of course, any long skirt works well during the winter. Wear it with your favorite turtleneck, tights, and tall boots, so you don’t have to wait for spring to get in on this trend.

Outfit Inspiration

1.Long Denim Skirt + Graphic Tee + High Tops

The key to wearing a denim skirt is to treat it like any other jeans in your wardrobe. A denim skirt is inherently casual, so adding your favorite casual tops is a natural outfit combination. I recently picked up this Zodiac Tee from Anthropologie. It has the perfect drape to counter the structure of the skirt.

I’m wearing my new favorite sneakers, Paul Green Bronte, which I warned you would feature in many of my posts. They are pretty awesome, and I think you all need them. These fabulous sneakers are available in off-white, black, and tan leather. You can check my Spring Sneaker Trend post if you are shopping for sneakers this week.

2. Long Denim Skirt + Button-Up + Sandals

If you want to dress up this casual skirt, add your favorite button-up shirt. Mine is Vince Camuto in hammered satin. It has a bit of a shine to it. It also drapes nicely complimenting the structure of the skirt. I bought this shirt at the Nordstrom Anniversary sale almost three years ago. They still offer the same shirt now. It is a classic style that never goes out of fashion. At $89, the cost per wear is low.

My sandals are Hispanitas from several years ago. They are sadly no longer available. My bag is the Goyard Artois, which is one of my favorite purses ever. It has more structure than the St. Louis tote but similar shape and zips closed. This is my favorite of the three looks because it feels the most polished.

3. Long Denim Skirt + Graphic Sweatshirt + Slip-On Sneakers

Though spring can’t come soon enough, the weather in So Cal isn’t that much different from February to March, March to April. It can be warm, or it can be quite chilly. The most practical way to wear this skirt for spring is to add a graphic sweatshirt. I am mildly obsessed with Anine Bing sweatshirts. This one has an excellent tapered fit that doesn’t add bulk.

Even though I want to switch up my style, I am not sure this trend is me. I decided to return this skirt because I need a smaller size, but I am not sure I am going to re-order. It could be I need a skirt with less rigid denim or one that is more A-line. But I am not sure that will help.

The reality is that not all trends are right for everybody. My figure is more straight, and I think a denim skirt looks best on an hourglass figure or someone with narrower hips. Since this trend doesn’t flatter my figure, I think I will sit this one out.

What do you think of the long denim skirt trend? Are you giving it a try or skipping it? Leave me a comment below. I would love to hear from you.
