Styling a Plaid Suit

It is the summer of suiting. Suites are everywhere, in every fabric and hundreds of styles and cuts and I am all over it. Actually, I have been hunting for a good pink suit since I saw Kyle Richards wearing a stunner on RHOBH. So far, no luck in finding the perfect one. However, I recently picked up the matching blazer on sale to a pair of Halogen plaid pants I love. The suit is surprisingly versatile and so easy to style. One great thing about suits is you can wear them as an outfit or pair the separates with other items. A suit is so flexible and easy to style and with so many great suits on the market now there is one to fit your look.

What to Consider When Buying a Suit

Here are some things to consider when buying a suit. First, what fabric is right for you. The suit I purchased is mostly polyester with some rayon and spandex. I like this combination because it is easy to care for and holds its structure. Linen suits are nice for warm climates but I don’t like dealing with the wrinkles.  Any natural fiber like silk or even a thin wool is also great for suits. Of course, the cost of a suit increases significantly when you buy these fabrics.  I recommend buying classic suits in silk or wool which last longer.  But, for a fun summer wardrobe update add a less expense suit that has trendier details just for fun.

Another key thing to look at when buying a suit are the suit details. For example, this suit has white buttons which are more trendy. If you are looking for something more classic look for button details that don’t stand out. However, buttons are an easy fix and if I should get sick of the white buttons, I can easily swap them out for something else. Buttons can give away the overall quality of the suit so look closely at the button quality for hints about how long your suit will last.

With all stripes and plaids, I always like to make sure the line details match up. I am a bit OCD that way.  If the seams are crooked then it will drive me crazy. I think it is also a sure sign of a cheaper quality suit. Another detail I insist on is a quality lining. Nothing says cheap suit to me quicker than no lining in the blazer. You can find suits at all price points with this attention to detail so it just isn’t about spending more. It is about refusing to compromise quality for price.

Today I am styling this super cute, Halogen plaid double breasted suit.  A good double breasted suit can be worn either buttoned closed or open with your favorite camisole. I am wearing here with the J.Crew Slim Perfect Tank.

Blazer with White Denim

Next, I paired the blazer with my Paige Hoxton Ankle Skinny white jeans from my Best White Jeans for Spring post and the Sam Edelman Holmes Sandal which I picked up in both black and pink because they have the perfect walkable heel. Forgo the camisole for a sexier, evening look.

Blazer with Shorts

You can easily wear this blazer with your casual shorts for summer. Right now blazers with shorts are all over Instagram. Most of the celebrities and influencers are wearing blazers with shorter shorts which I will definitely try but I like the look of the blazer over Bermuda, denim shorts. Mine are the Hudson Amelia shorts from last year but they have updated them for this year with a cut off edge. I just cuffed them for a shorter length. My shoes are the Adidas Originals Continental leather sneakers and a great update if you love the Adidas Superstars. Both are beyond comfortable!

Pants with Print Top

Add an of-the-moment Hawaiian print golf shirt for a fun and preppy look. You can definitely mix florals and plaid. This Rails Zuma Camp shirt is perfectly cropped and the colors are so vidid and beautiful. It comes in seven different fun prints and stripes. And a quick note about my sandals – they are the Frye Carson Ankle Zip Sandals and I bought them probably four years ago. This simple sandal is one of my favorites. I reach for it over and over again. It is super comfortable and you know Frye has impeccable quality. They still make these sandals today and I can’t recommend them enough. I have them in both brown and black and I love them!

Blazer with Summer Denim

A quick and easy outfit is to add your suit blazer to your favorite cropped denim and sleeveless top. The Everlane Japanese GoWeave High Neck Tank is all kinds of awesome. Not only is the cut universally flattering but the GoWeave fabric is light, drapey and wrinke resistant. I am loving this cool mint color this season. It feels so fresh and on point. I now have this tank in three colors because I love it so much. You guys know I love Everlane for their impeccable quality, ethical practices and transparent costing. Every time I buy one of their pieces I feel like I have scored the best deal.

I am so glad I picked up this matching blazer on a whim. Do you do stuff like that? Pick an item up on sale not quite sure if it will work for you but because it is on sale you give it a try? I swing big and often miss but man when I connect, it is a home run. This suit makes me feel all sorts of stylish. Suits just kinda do that. They make you look like you put in the effort with minimal, actual effort. I am always all about that. StyleDahlia is about looking good and feeling good but not overthinking in achieving this goal. No amount of fuss is worth it to me. Suits are effortless dressing and I am loving it.

So they made it kinda hard for me to pull suits together on the widget. I have added both the blazer and pants when possible but you likely will have to click through one to get to the other. I loved to hear how you are wearing suits this season. Drop me a comment. Do you have a question on how to style your suit? Ask away! Have a great day Dahlias.
