When it comes to fashion, I am definitely NOT a minimalist. My closet lays this truth bare. However, I understand the desire to live a minimalist lifestyle. In several of my circles, the question has recently been raised, ‘if you could just buy one piece of clothing each month, what would it be?’
The overall consensus was if you could only buy one item a month, make sure it is a classic of great quality and a wardrobe staple. These discussions led me to this post idea. Each month I will highlight the item I would buy IF I were going to buy only one item a month all year long. I’m calling it ‘The One Item Challenge’. Are you game?
If you are a minimalist fashionista, I hope this post will inspire you on what item to buy. If you are a fashion whore like me, this post can serve as inspiration for at least one of your shopping trips. Then maybe consider living more minimalist in another area of your life. Or not, you do, you boo.
What is Minimalism?
Minimalism is learning to live with less: less financial burden, less stuff, and more experiences. It goes hand in hand with sustainability, which looks to meet our current moment’s needs without jeopardizing the earth for future generations. Of course, as with anything, there are critics. Some see minimalism as a luxury of the rich. Critics see it as a selfish way to live, focusing only on what you need versus what you can give to others.
These criticisms seem harsh. In a world where consumerism is the norm, minimalism reminds us that we don’t need so much stuff. My minimalist spirit has me cleaning out and donating items about every three months. This is also sustainable as my discarded goods go to new homes. It also makes up for my lack of minimalism in so many other areas.

January One Item to Buy
In the spirit of minimalism, my recommendation for the one item for January is a coat or jacket. A quality outer layer is an essential piece for any minimalist wardrobe. I suggest buying one in January when many are on sale, and the selection is at its best.
I recommend picking one of the following styles: a puffer, a classic coat, or a leather jacket. Choose the one that fits your lifestyle the best. If you live in a cold climate, a quality down coat is essential. It doesn’t matter what part of the country you live in; a classic coat is a perfect addition to any wardrobe. In warmer climates, a stylish leather jacket may be all that is needed.
Last year I purchased the IRO Han Leather Jacket, which I can wear most of the year. The year before, I picked up the North Face Triple Parka for my trip into the snow. It literally (ok. Not literally but as a CA girl I felt near death in the cold) saved me on a particularly cold trip to Chicago. This CA could not deal with the freezing temperature and wind. Now for a quick rundown of the coats, I suggest you consider.
Puffer Jacket or Coat
A puffer jacket or coat is a great option if you live in a particularly cold climate or your lifestyle is casual. I love a good puffer jacket. They are perfect for running errands, throwing on after a workout, or getting outside to exercise. I picked up the Patagonia Nano Puff at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, and I find myself wearing it all the time. It is lightweight yet keeps you so warm. The jacket isn’t bulky, so I can layer a larger coat over it if needed.
I am also a huge fan of The North Face puffers. They are available in various fills and lengths depending on your weather needs. I’ve owned several of my North Face coats for over 10 years. Last year, I purchased the Water Repellant Down Jacket in Olive. It was the beginning of my green obsession. If you want to know more click here.
Why I Love North Face Jackets
The North Face invests in R&D, putting their coats on the frontline of the newest technology. Their down jackets only use the finest in goose down with options for fill from 500 to 900. The fill is measured in cubic inches. They also offer Thermoball, an alternative to goose down that can be packed easily for travel. If you can’t tell, I am a huge fan of The North Face.
Here are some of my picks for classic puffer jackets and coats. Many are on sale, meaning you get a bigger bang for your buck. These days sales are changing rapidly, so make sure to check back often. You can also click the heart under the item and enter your email address, and you will be notified when the item you are interested in goes on sale.
Classic Coat
A classic coat is another wardrobe staple you can often pick up on sale in January. I recommend a classic cut in tan or black. This year tan coats are having a major moment. Below I am wearing the Cocoon Coat by Everlane. When looking for a coat to last you years, make sure there are no overtly trendy details. For example, skip details like puffed shoulders, exaggerated collars, and/or shiny buttons. However, buttons can be easily swapped out. So if you love a coat and the buttons are too trendy, buy it and swap them out in the future.
J.Crew is a fabulous place to pick up quality coats on sale. Their Cocoon Coat is a worthwhile investment. Popular year after year, this wool coat is available in so many fabulous colors. However, if you are looking to buy just one coat, I suggest sticking with a neutral color that works with your wardrobe: tan, navy, or black.
Leather Jacket
I got my first leather jacket as a gift from my boyfriend when I was 17 yrs old. When I graduated from college and got my first credit card, my first purchase was, you guessed it, a leather jacket. Over the years, a leather jacket is one of my most worn items. I recently upgraded to the IRO Han Leather Jacket, which is costly but will last for years. It is a warmer leather jacket than I have had in the past, but that was one of my requirements.
My last leather jacket was the Madewell Washed Leather Jacket, which I purchased six years ago. It definitely still has a lot of life in it, and my original intention was to pass it on to my daughter, but I decided to keep it for when the weather is warmer. She can borrow it any time she wants. I also have the Madewell jacket in Dried Sienna, which is a delicious warm cinnamon color.
Personally, I am drawn to a biker-style jacket, but there are so many great leather jacket options. You are sure to find one that fits your personality. January is a great time to pick up a quality leather jacket because many are on sale, so you get more for your money. As with most things, the more you spend, the better quality the leather and details. But even if you only have $200 to spend you can find a great jacket for the price.
Remember to inspect the details. Quality hardware and stitching make a huge difference. Fit is also important. A well-fitted jacket looks more expensive than an oversized, ill-fitted one. Some people recommend sizing down in leather jackets, but I have not found that helpful. Leather does stretch over time, but I prefer a jacket to feel comfortable from the get-go.
So are you jumping on the one item a month bandwagon? If so, I suggest a coat for your January purchase. Whether you choose a puffer, classic, or leather jacket, there are so many fabulous coats on sale right now. As I mentioned, the ‘one item challenge’ isn’t for me. I failed on January 1st. But does anyone really expect a fashion blogger only to buy one item a month?
However, I am here to support your efforts in minimalism. Check back each month for my One Item Challenge article. If you, too, aren’t up for the challenge, no judgment from me. I am here for you, too, trying all the latest trends and bringing you all my favorite finds.
