Honest Review of J.Crew’s New Weekend Collection

The Weekend Collection

I am a J.Crew fan going way back. Their classic style matched my needs perfectly during my early days in the corporate environment. Then Jenna Lyons took over as Creative Director, and J.Crew entered the fashion mainstream. J.Crew pieces become cult favorites. Her departure in 2018 wasn’t a surprise, as her style hadn’t evolved with the times. The current Creative Director, Johanna Uurasjarvi arrived with ten years of experience at one of my other favorite retailers, Anthropologie. I was excited to see where her vision would take the company.

Here we are in 2020, and J.Crew has been on a roll. I consistently find myself buying and wearing J.Crew from day-to-day. I love their Cashmere Crew, which I detailed How to Wear in a recent post. So when J.Crew launched the new Weekend Collection, I was intrigued. The Weekend collection offers “the spirit of Saturday morning…any day of the week.” Who doesn’t love a Saturday morning? And honestly, because I work at home, my everyday style is weekend style. The Weekend Collection isn’t a true Athleisure collection but more of a hybrid similar to items you would find at Athleta.

So I decided to order a few items that caught my eye and give them a test drive. Here are my honest thoughts on fit, quality, and style. Overall, this collection of wearable items featuring fun and forward colors. Each piece meets the goal of weekend wearable. You can always rely on J.Crew for quality pieces that wash well and wear well. Like other J.Crew pieces, the fit isn’t always consistent. The Weekend collection is a welcome addition to J.Crew’s offerings. With the addition of this new collection, J.Crew covers fashion from work to the weekend and everything in between.

Sweatshirt + Tank Top + Leggings

The new collection offers easy to wear pieces like t-shirts, leggings, sweatshirts, and sneakers. Of course, the camo leggings immediately caught my eye. I am camo obsessed, and therefore, camo leggings are a no brainer or me.

J.Crew Garment-Dyed V-Neck Hoodie – Cotton terry with distressing along the collar. I am wearing a large, which would be my usual size in a sweatshirt since I prefer a bit of an oversized fit. Though not defined as a shrunken style, it runs small. I found this to be a bit short and a bit tight, especially to wear with leggings. This hoodie is available in six colors, and the weight is perfect for spring. This one is going back because the fit isn’t right on me.

7/8th High Rise Leggings in Camo – These leggings are cotton/elastane, and I am wearing a medium. The medium fits a bit small with the fabric pulling across my thighs more than I like. I also found the high-rise, double-waistband to create creases in my sides. Overall, I love these leggings (what can I say? They are camo), and I decided to order a large to try.

Pullover + Layering Tank + Leggings

Superplush Sherpa Half-Zip Pullover – Have you made it through winter without buying one of these sherpa style jackets? They seem to be everywhere. I keep trying different styles from different retailers, and I always find them to be too bulky for my 5’9″ frame. But when I saw this one with the fun neon details, I decided to give this style of jacket one more try. If I were going to purchase one of these jackets, this would be the one. The fabric is super-soft and provides quite a bit of warmth despite being relatively light and not bulky. I am wearing a Large.

Longline Layering Tank – This tank comes in several fun colors, including the Kiwi color that matches perfectly with the details on the half zip.  The tank top is long and meant for layering. I was surprised by how deep the armholes are. To wear this tank, you would need to add a sports bra or another tighter tank beneath it unless you are okay with flashing your bra (no judgment if you are).  I purchased this tank in large thinking being a DD, I would need the space across my chest. I found this tank to run large. A medium would fit me much better.

Sweater + Denim Shirt + Leggings

Boyfriend Crewneck Sweater – I ordered this sweater on a whim after seeing it on the model online. I don’t need another sweater. But this sweater is fantastic! I love it. The sweater is merino wool but not a bit itchy. The yarn has a marled look, which means that it contains more than one color. On the auburn sweater, that means red, orange, and purple, which is difficult to see in the photo. It gives the fabric fantastic depth. Knowing that boyfriend is synonymous with oversized, I ordered a medium. It fits perfectly. The sweater is a bit longer than I expected, as you will see in outfit #5, but overall, this one of my favorite purchases from the Weekend collection. The sweater is available in three colors, including grey, which would be my usual go-to, but I decided to step out of the box with this one, and I am glad I did.

Everyday Chambray Shirt – This shirt isn’t part of the new Weekend collection but is one of my most worn pieces from J.Crew. I layered this under boyfriend sweater because I always need to option to pull off a sweater should I get hot. I wear this shirt all the time, and it is one of my Must-Have Travel Items.

Sweater + Pull-On Pants

Boyfriend Crewneck Sweater – I ordered this sweater on a whim after seeing it on the model online. I don’t need another sweater. But this sweater is fantastic! I love it. The sweater is merino wool but not a bit itchy. The yarn has a marled look, which means that it contains more than one color. On the auburn sweater, that means red, orange, and purple, which is difficult to see in the photo. It gives the fabric fantastic depth. Knowing that boyfriend is synonymous with oversized, I ordered a medium. It fits perfectly. The sweater is a bit longer than I expected, but overall, this one of my favorite purchases from the Weekend collection. The sweater is available in three colors, including grey, which would be my usual go-to, but I decided to step out of the box with this one, and I am glad I did.

Drapey Drawstring Pant –  Along with the boyfriend sweater, I purchased these pants because of the styling on the model online.  I don’t need another pair of olive pants. I ordered them to try for this review. But, of course, I fell in love with them. I am wearing a medium, and they fit perfectly. I wear an 8 in most J.Crew pants. The drape is extremely flattering and beyond comfortable. The pants are light-weight and will be perfect for spring. The inseam is 26′ which is a bit shorter than I like and a length I would only wear on warmer days. I love these pants so much; I purchased the black too.

Overall, this outfit is super cute, and the auburn sweater compliments olive so well. However, the sweater is a winter piece, and the pants are definitely for spring/summer. I decided to keep both but likely will never wear them together.
