Best Fall Shoe Trends
Summer is fabulous for so many reasons but my favorite season for shoes is fall. The fall shoe trends this year are beyond good! Dangerously good! If you know what I mean? Just give me all the cool shoes! In years past, clothing trends have influenced my shoe shopping. This year, the shoe selection has influenced my clothing purchases. The fall shoe selection is all about making a statement. Let your shoes be the stars this season. We all know that shoes can make an outfit. Well, that is definitely true this year.
Fall means finally returning to shoes that you can wear all day. Sandals are pretty but finding a comfortable pair is always a challenge. Boots, booties, loafers and sneakers just make my feet happy! My love for sneakers is large (you all know) so I will be covering fall sneakers in a different post. Without any further delay my favorite fall shoe trends!

Croc Print
Initially I planned to cover all animal prints together but the real stand out for me this season is crocodile print. There is something so clean and polished about croc print. There are so many options for croc print shoes. All the high-end fashion designers are all over this trend right now, which tells me by spring croc print will be everywhere. Croc print looks fabulous in all your favorite shoe styles from tall boots to ballet flats.
My goal was to find a pair of low heel, tall boots or booties to wear this fall. Luckily, one of my favorite shoe brands, M.Gemi, introduced the Corso Concavo which is exactly what I wanted. Well almost, the heel is a bit high for me for everyday, but I have these booties in black suede and I know they are comfortable.
Here are some of my other favorite croc print shoes.
Animal Print
Animal print is still going strong for fall. Shoe departments look more like zoo enclosures. This season, I am drawn to snake print over leopard but leopard has been a long standing staple in my wardrobe. Needless to say, there are so many options for animal print shoes out there from leopard to zebra.
This seasons selection of snake includes fabulous colorful snake patterns including red, green and yellow. You can go as bold as you want or as subtle as you wish. The Vince Camuto Nestral Knee High boots are one fun option. They look far more expensive than their price. My son always calls me out on my expensive purchases and he tried with these boots (above) but I got to tell him what a great deal they were. Love it when I can be right with my 14 yr old son because you know that doesn’t happen very often. I have two warnings about these boots: 1. I am pretty long legged and they hit me right at the knee so anyone shorter they may be OTK boots and 2. The calf opening is on the bigger side so will work well for those you who need a wide calf option.
I also love snake print booties. They are available in every possible style and heel height. I have the Sam Edelman Winona Bootie which I purchased last year. I like them better than the Paige Willa Bootie which is also very popular but much more expensive. Seriously, that never happens but Sam Edelman kills it with the boot styles. Both are a grey and black snake print but now Paige makes the Willa in multi snake pattern which is much more “look at me” and pretty darn awesome. If you like the idea of grabbing attention with your shoes, try a tall boot in snake print. You are sure to get lots of compliments. Snake print booties are perfect for adding a little interest to an outfit while still only making a small statement. Here are some other great snake print boot options.
Combat Boots
I have been wearing combat boots all of my life. I can’t think of a time that my closet didn’t hold at least one pair. But with this season the focus is on extreme chunky soles circa the 90’s. I am all for a good lug sole which will add an edge to any outfit including the season’s floral maxi dresses. Right now, I have two pairs of combat boots in my closet but I am definitely eyeing a few with a decidedly bigger sole.
The other retro trend that is big this year is lace up boots of a more demure or old fashioned nature. This was my thing in the 80’s. I mean, could you even call yourself a Madonna fan if you didn’t sport heeled-lace up boots? I still think about the pair of white perforated heeled booties I wore all through high school. They would be so, on trend right now! However, I am sitting this trend out. The styles are usually too high heeled for me and the trend is more formal than fits my casual lifestyle. Just wave to me, over here! Drooling from afar.
Square Toe
I am slightly obsessed with square toe shoes. This trend just feels so fresh. This summer, the square toe sandals were all over Instagram. The style just works well with both edgy menswear pieces and more feminine floral print dresses. I am especially fond of the square toe flats after years of round toe or super pointy, a square toe is new and unexpected. Loafers are also popular this season and a square toe adds an irreverence to the preppy staple. Square toes shoes come in all your favorite styles from flats to the highest of high heels.
I am always excited for fall fashions. The return to cool temps means more options for dressing. The shoe selection this year has me dreaming of cool temps and planning outfits already. Of course, here in San Diego it will be a while before I can go all in on boots but it is always good to have something to look forward to.
