Everlane Lantern Top – Puffy Sleeve Alternative
If you have read my blog for a bit, you know that I consider my shoulders to be too broad for certain trends. Of course, when you love fashion having anything off-limits feels, well, limiting. The puffy sleeve trend seems to be everywhere. It began last year but took over for fall. Unfortunately, puffy sleeves are on my not with these linebacker shoulders list. Being ever the rebellious spirit, I have a hard time accepting what I can’t do especially when it excludes me from some of the prettiest fall dresses and tops. Then Everlane introduced their Silky Cotton Lantern Top,, and a perfect puffy sleeve alternative was born.
The Lantern refers to the style of the sleeves,, which resemble a Japanese lantern. The sleeves have ever so slight volume but only through the elbows. There is no added volume at the shoulders. Everlane describes the shirt as combining put-together polish with lived-in comfort, and that is exactly right. The cotton has a slight sheen but is relaxed and comfortable and can easily be dressed up or worn casually.

Why I Love It
The shirt comes in five fabulous colors, and I purchased the indigo, and black. Being not only broad-shouldered but big-busted, I find a v-neck to be most flattering on my figure. The v-neck on this top completely work appropriate and doesn’t require constant monitoring to make sure you haven’t flashed anyone your bra. No-fuss fashion is my jam! With Everlane, I find it necessary to size up in their tops and dresses to prevent pulling across the bust. This size 10 gave me a slight slouchier look, but I prefer that to button gaping. If you prefer a fitted look and aren’t big busted, your normal size should work perfectly.
You can wear this cute top in a ton of ways. Below, I paired the top with my Everlane Lightweight Straight Leg Crop. They are some of my favorite summer pants though I wish the rise were just a bit lower. The front rise on a size 8 is almost 12″, far higher than what I am usually comfortable with. The pants have a fair amount of give, which helps not to feel too constricted.
Indigo is So Pretty
The indigo is such a great color for fall and is a perfect complement to the green pistachio color that is huge this season. I find this blue universally flattering and easy to wear with black and most existing items in my closet. When pairing blue with denim, I prefer to mix light and dark. So with the darker blue top, I would wear my lighter wash denim. I also love this color with grey. My rag & bone Dre jeans are some of my favorite, and below, I paired the Lantern top with my grey dre’s (say that 10 times fast).
For Dress Up Too
You can easily dress up this shirt for an evening out or work. Because the sleeves are not too voluminous, you can easily add your favorite blazer or jacket for warmth. I am wearing my black Lantern top with J.Crew Cameron crops in Plaid. This outfit is definitely work appropriate.
Add your favorite dark denim skinny jeans, a leather jacket, and some booties, and this top will take you out for the night. The subtle sheen makes this top perfect for date night or drinks with the girls.
Why I Love Everlane
Hopefully, I have convinced you that this top is all that,, but now let me tell you why I love Everlane. Everlane is a company that wants to make a difference by providing exceptional quality from ethical factories based on radical transparency. You can view all the details of where and how each garment is manufactured. You can see the exact cost details, and Everlane takes only a modest mark up on all of their goods. What this means to you is that you are purchasing high-quality items at a reasonable price while supporting factories that meet ethics standards on the environment and fair wages and reasonable hours for workers.
Everlane has a simple style aesthetic, so their pieces last for years. They usually produce only limited runs at a time, so items often sell out but, if popular, will be restocked. Everlane is primarily an online store with only four storefronts across the country. Returns are simple, but if you want a refund, they charge a $6 restocking fee. If you know you will shop again, you can return for store credit without paying the restocking fee,, which I always do.
