Dressing Room Diaries

Welcome to the 2nd installment of Dressing Room Diaries. DRD is where I head out to my favorite stores and try on items that catch my eye. I give you honest reviews and sizing information to help you shop. My hair may be tussled, the lighting is awful and I clearly haven’t perfected the art of the selfie but I do showcase current items and trends in stores now.

Shorts on the Brain

I headed out with the idea that I would be shopping for shorts outfits. Honestly, the short selection was just hoo-hum and pretty slim. Not sure yet if it is just the current selection or this trend will follow through the season.  The stores were filled with fun, fabulous prints, summer pants, dresses and jumpsuits.

I don’t know if I was inspired by our upcoming trip to Mexico or just feeling all the feels for the bright colors but I was really drawn to loud prints. A good print is a great way to boost your summer vibe.

Madewell Finds

Madewell is always on my shopping list. I love their classic yet irreverent style. I have had my eye on this daisy print shirt. It is super fun and playful and a good red which isn’t something I can always say about Madewell reds. I love a good drape on a shirt and this one is perfectly slouchy. I am wearing the M. Just grabbed a pair of jeans to try with the top and picked the 9″ High-Rise Skinny Crop with a Button Front. I fell in love with these jeans. They have the perfect amount of stretch and the wash perfect for summer. The crop was a bit too cropped for me and the uber-helpful salesperson helped track down a long in a store in NYC.

Oh how I love this Rainbow Stripe Top.  It is all sorts of 80’s goodness with a total Stranger Things vibe. I can see this top with  fun cut-off denim shorts and your favorite caramel leather sandals. Completely, loving all the rainbow details out there. This one is subtle and perfect in every way.

You know I love a good jumpsuit. I prefer them over dresses because for some reason I always worry I will have to get on the floor in a dress and it won’t be easy. Why? Why do I worry about this when I rarely get on the floor? I guess I never want to have a “Britney” moment. Yes, these are the silly things that take up my brain. But, I do love a good jumpsuit and these two are both awesome. The Madewell Button Front Wide Leg Jumpsuit in Navy is a lightweight Rayon. It is beyond comfortable. It has a little ruching at the back to make it easier to move. I am wearing an 8 in both jumpsuits. The Madewell Button Front Day Jumpsuit is a really pretty salmon color pink (my selfie doesn’t do the color justice). It is a heavier, more structured cotton but still not too heavy for summer. I am always hesitant to wear head to toe bright color. I prefer blacks, grey or white for a whole outfit. This jumpsuit is super flattering. So if pink jumpsuits are your jam then this is an excellent option. I would definitely buy this jumpsuit if it came in black or maybe even olive.

Now after I just told you I prefer jumpsuits, here is a sweet little summer dress. I guess my love of rainbow print made me try it on. I love this dress for summer barbecues or for after a day at the beach. I sized up because I don’t like this style of dress to pull across my chest. It often does with my regular size. If you aren’t large busted you should be fine with your normal size.

Anthropologie Finds

Next, I headed over to Anthropologie. For me Anthro is hit or miss. I often find more online than in stores. But today, I wanted all the pretty things…

I knew the minute I saw this top, it was coming home with me. I love everything about this top. The bright colors, the tie detail on the sleeves, the button front. It also looks perfect with my J.Crew leopard print belt. The Maeve Amelia Top runs pretty large. I am wearing a medium but likely could have sized down to a small. The large was enormous, definitely not proportionally bigger. You can easily wear this top with shorts, denim or even dress it up with black pants or a skirt. It is completely versatile. It is one of those finds, that I went back to see if they offer the cut in other colors or patterns. I would have likely picked them up too. I love this top! Did I say, “I love this top” yet? ? Do you decide you want something but you know it will go on sale? I definitely want these two tops but I think they will definitely go on sale. There is always a calculation of whether or not an item will sell out before it goes on sale. It is a risk to wait but in this case, I think my caution will save me $. See honey, I do try and save $. Funny me, I doubt he has made it this far in the article. Anywho! I think I am safe to wait for two reasons. 1. Both items are not photographed well online. 2. Most crazy florals end up on sale at Anthro.

Did you know that on all my product widgets you can sign up for sale alerts? ShopStyle will email you when the item you want goes on sale. Pretty cool, huh?!

I love the color of this Maeve Mica Sleeveless Top. I know I have said I am not much for yellow but somehow this yellow doesn’t overwhelm or maybe I am finally warming to the color as it seems to be dominating the store shelves and Instagram feeds. I like the cool tones of peach and teal with it to balance the warmth of the yellow. I am wearing a size 8 but it definitely too big. I need to size down. So I would say this top runs pretty large.

The Vineet Bahl Top is so pretty in person. Honestly, my pictured doesn’t do it justice. I was trying to get a view of the beautiful embroidery on the sleeve. The waist belt can tie off to the side and has a nice contrast pattern on the back. This top has a flattering drape and I plan to wear it over long shorts.

There are so many pretty skirts on the market right now. I have a love/hate relationship with them. I think because I am short waisted, skirts aren’t always flattering on me. I keep looking though because there are so many wonderful prints out there. I knew the moment I laid eyes on the Maeve Laura Midi Wrap Skirt that it was universally flattering and therefore, I should try it on. The faux wrap has a tie waist and there is a drop ruffle only on the front. The skirt has a side zip and elastic back. The stripes are what makes this skirt so flattering. I am wearing a size 8. My top hasn’t hit Anthropologie online yet but I will update when it does.

I am sucker for comfortable pants. These light-weight Orana Print Joggers are perfect for summer. They are a relaxed fit and machine washable. I bet you won’t want to take them off. I am wearing the black & white pattern but they come in a pretty pink snake print (wasn’t in stores) and a green floral with a 70’s beach vibe. I am wearing the Medium.

This dress conjures up dreams of island life. Sipping iced tea under an umbrella after a day of sun and surf. Can’t you just see it? I am so vacation ready! Only sixteen more days till our beach vacation. I’m definitely bringing this Yasmine Maxi Dress along. Wearing size Medium.

Nordstrom Finds

Next, I headed over to Nordstrom. I find the layout of our new Nordstrom just so challenging. I finally got in the groove and found a few things specifically avoiding the sale racks. If you are interested in my 1/2 Yearly Sale picks you can check them out here.  The sale official ends on the 2nd but many of the items remaining will be available in their ongoing sale section.

I picked up these two different tops to try on. The first is the Reformation Dahlia Lace Top and if I had known the name, I likely would have bought it just for that. I love all the pretty dahlias. This top has sleeves that violate my “no ruffle” shoulder rule but the material is breezy and the ruffle lays well. The main reason I passed on this is that it is pretty see through. These days I just run too hot to add a nude camisole to a see through top. Wearing a Large.

On a whim, I picked up this Rails Zuma Camp Top in Hana print.  I was inspired by the tropical print. Can you tell I am in desperate need of a vacation? Or at least some sun. Please lots of sun. I love the rose color of this top and the floral print is beautiful. I usually wear a Large in Rails but I preferred the Medium in this top. I plan to wear it with white denim. I think it also looks pretty cute with jeans and leopard.

Are you guys still with me? I know it is a lot. There just was so many good things this time.  So hard to resist, I picked up this Sanctuary Striped Top and the matching Inland Tie Waist Linen Crop Pants.  I am a fan of Sanctuary brand and I was easily drawn to this top. It is only $79 and super versatile. When you see the matching pants you might as well give them a try, right? A matching top and pants is kinda like a jumpsuit (which you know I love) but with the added opportunity to wear the items separately.  I really like the look of this outfit and I think it is great for travel as you can wear both pieces with other items in your wardrobe. I plan to wear this outfit with my Jeffrey Campbell Teclado Slide in Red Croc. I am wearing a 28 in these pants. I often wear 29’s in Sanctuary but these run true to size.

J.Crew Finds

Am I the only one who thinks J.Crew stores selection is lacking? It is easy to find a ton of great items online but when I walk into the store, their selection is limited. Why don’t they rotate in their stylish new stuff. I happened in because I had several items to return. Specifically, I was also looking for the Apron Maxi Dress I spied online. Of course, they didn’t have it in my store. But a few items did catch my eye.  I love the blue of this Open V-Neck Line Toile print top.  I paired it with the Paper-bag Shorts in black. I keep hoping the paper-bag waist short will work for me. They look so cute on Scotti at TheMomEdit. They just aren’t right for me. They add bulk right where I don’t want more bulk.

Vacation Ready

All of these new finds will definitely be packed for our upcoming trip to La Paz. We usually head to Cabo but we wanted to mix it up and try something new. We will be flying out of Tijuana. I will let you know how that goes. Do you guys follow me on Instagram? Catch these new looks in action over on Instagram or on Pinterest. Hi Kimberly:
I love this! I enjoyed seeing all the styles you tried. The Nordstrom Dahlia Lace top really caught my eye. Also, the cute dress in your first picture is adorable! I could not find any info on that? Did I miss? I would love to give that dress a try.

    Thank you, LeAna
