I am entirely shopped out after the holiday. With all the gift purchases and the inevitable “one for me” purchases, I can’t think of a thing I need. I shopped the After-Christmas sales, not thinking of when my packages would be delivered. We went on vacation the 27th, and boxes started arriving that day. It took two neighbors to help collect all the packages, including two rugs I purchased from Wayfair. Oopsy.
In my defense, there are a lot of great deals to be had after Christmas. Also, my DD birthday is mid-January, and I always wait to see what she didn’t get for Xmas that she wanted. Then I pick those items up for her birthday. And now here we are in January, and my pile of returns is huge.

5 Coats You Need – On Sale!
1. Camel Wool Coat
If you don’t own a classic camel coat, now is the time to pick one up. Not only are they having a moment, but they never really go out of style. Because they are trendy this year, there are so many options on sale now. The coat I’m wearing below is from Everlane. Their coats rarely go on sale, but because they practice transparent pricing, the cost is reasonable compared to similar jackets. I am wearing the Cacoon Coat, which sold out but I like the Italian ReWool Coat as an alternative.
When considering a classic coat, look for simple silhouettes. Stick with a traditional collar whichever style suits your needs. Buttons are easily replaced, so don’t worry too much about them. However, buttons are one quick way to tell the quality of a coat. Cheap buttons (not necessarily cheap looking because there are some expensive, “cheap” looking buttons out there) point to inferior quality and likely poor quality.
A good camel coat can last for years so I recommend buying the best one you can afford. With year after year usage, the cost per wear CPW will be low. With so many great options on sale right now, you can pick up a higher quality coat for the price.

2. Black Wool Coat
A black wool coat is a workhorse. You will end up wearing this coat the most of all of your winter layers. For that reason, I don’t mind spending a little extra on the best wool coat you can afford. Of course, if you pick one up on sale, your dollar stretches just a little bit further. My coat is from Madewell. I picked it up a few years ago for our December trip to NYC. I also brought my North Face puffer coat for colder or wet days.
I love the leather-like trim and asymmetrical zipper on this coat, but it will date it more quickly than a more traditional style. I also prefer slant pockets instead of these top entry pockets. This type of pocket carries your cell phone easily but isn’t great for putting your hands in your pockets.
3. Plaid Coat
A plaid coat is an instant outfit-maker. Top your outfit with a plaid coat, and you will look effortlessly chic. Plaid is another hot trend right now. I am rather obsessed. It seems like a plaid coat would be too trendy to wear multiple seasons, but that isn’t necessarily true. A good plaid coat is a classic that, if appropriately picked can last for years.
My coat is from Anthropologie. I love the cool blue tones with the pop of red. I debated between two coats last year, and this one ultimately won out. However, it is a bit warm for our climate, so I don’t get as much use out of it as I like. For that reason, I recommend function before form. When buying a plaid coat, consider what weight, length, and colors, you would get the most use. Of course, function is always important when purchasing coats but less so with solid colors because it is typical to have more than one coat in a standard color like black or tan.
For me, a plaid with black, not brown accents works best with my overall wardrobe. I should have purchased a lighter weight plaid coat, though. This one is just too warm. It has to be pretty darn cold for me to wear it. The day I took these pictures was just such a day. Bright but cold with a bitter wind.

4. Shearling & Faux Fur Coat
Another major trend this winter, which isn’t going anywhere soon, is the sherpa or faux fur coat. These coats are elevated and more ladylike than the Teddy Bear Coat style from last year though that style continues to be a hit with young people.
I am picky about selecting this type of coat. I am tall, and I don’t want to look huge by adding lots of bulk with a fuzzy, furry, or full coat. I prefer the cuts to be straight or slim. I avoid overly puffy fur or wide-cut shoulders. The last thing I want is to look like an actual bear in a faux fur coat.
I’m wearing the Albany Reversible Sherpa Jacket from Velvet. I like that I can wear it two ways. Coco, my Cavachon, seems to love all of my jackets. While I took these shots, she kept trying to get in the picture. She usually is quite shy. But as I mentioned, it was pretty darn cold, so maybe she wanted a jacket of her own. At StyleDahlia, we are all about faux fur. We believe real fur belongs on our furry friends.

5. Modern Trench Coat
Every wardrobe needs a good trench coat. They are a perfect layering piece. Though I have coveted a Burberry trench for many years, I can’t justify the cost. There isn’t enough opportunity to wear a trench coat in San Diego. However, I found a great inexpensive alternative.
As you all know, I am a huge fan of Everlane. If I haven’t convinced you how great Everlane is yet, please tell me what I have to do. I promise you will love their clothes! The Drape Trench Coat is an excellent alternative to The Burberry that won’t break the bank.
I opted for a traditional tan color trench, but trench coats are available in a multitude of colors these days, including some incredible plaids. Pick the color that works best for your wardrobe.

There is definitely enough winter left to get lots of use from these coats this season. Heck, winter is just getting started here in SoCal. If you stick with classic styles and colors, you can wear these coats for years to come. The holiday shopping fatigue is real. I get it. But if you are in the market for a new coat now is a great time to buy.
